In
the past year, we've distributed more than 4.5 million pounds
of food throughout Washtenaw County. Each month we're serving
more guests at our Community Kitchen and we're breaking records
in the amount of food we're rescuing and distributing to 150 partner
programs on the front-lines of hunger relief.
Even
with this increased volume of food, we're still struggling to
keep up with the growing need in our community. All of our programs
are serving an unprecedented number of individuals, seniors and
families in need - and many of these folks are accessing these
food resources for the first time.
We've usually been able to stretch the non-perishable food supplies
collected in the Spring through the "Stamp Out Hunger"
food drive until food drive donations pick back up in late September,
but despite collecting about the same amount as in past years,
we ran out in the first week of July.
We need more food. We're increasingly supplementing food donations
by purchasing food to distribute, but bridging the two month gap
in free food resources for our pantry programs will be a big challenge.
We need your help! Please consider organizing a neighborhood
food drive, a business food drive, or an individual food drive
from your cupboard. We can supply barrels for food drive collections,
or you can drop off any size donation at our warehouse on Carrot
Way during business hours. You can also drop off food at the People's
Food Co-Op on Fourth Avenue. More information on holding a food
drive is available here.
We're able to stretch a dollar pretty far with our purchasing
power, so if you can donate funds, we can do the shopping! For
only $35, you can underwrite the cost of three meals a day for
a child for an entire month, and $50 can feed a hungry senior
for one month.
